CLASS: Graphic Design and Digital Tools
ASSIGNMENT: Choose a song and create an abstract visualization based on the adjectives that come to mind when listening to the song

The words I used to describe Glen Miller's "In the Mood" were playful, upbeat, erratic, and lively. These adjectives helped guide the composition of my translation and the elements that I decided to include. For example, the wavy lines at the top and bottom of the design represent the steady rhythm that can be heard throughout most of the song. Unlike straight lines, I feel that the movement in the wavy lines also works to convey the song's playful and energetic tone. The musical piece also contains moments in which the music gets very soft but is then immediately followed by much louder instrumental notes. I decided to portray this inconsistent aspect of the piece by interrupting the continuous wavy lines with sharp, star-like shapes. I also included a significant amount of negative space in the center to represent the moments when the music reaches a soft, almost inaudible volume.
